Italian Bread



Mmmmm…..there is just nothing like the smell of fresh baking bread.  Honestly, the mere thought of it has me salivating.  This recipe is a simple bread machine recipe that tastes amazing!  I am completely besotted with it at the moment.  It takes all the self control I posses not to devour an entire loaf on my own. Oh, and it would make a delectable garlic bread, crostini, etc.  So, whip out that bread machine and give this recipe a try.

Ingredients:                                                                              Yields: 2 loaves

Bread Dough:                                                                              

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 cups bread flour

1 tablespoon light brown sugar

1 -1/3 cups warm water

2 -1/2 teaspoons salt

1 -1/2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil

2 -1/4 teaspoons yeast

Egg wash:

1 egg

1 tablespoon water

* a couple tablespoons cornmeal to dust baking sheets with.


Place all dough ingredients as listed in a bread machine.  Select your bread machines dough cycle.

Once the bread machine is done doing it’s thing – remove the dough and punch down to deflate on a lightly floured cutting board.

Cut dough in half, and form into two loaves.

Sprinkle a sheet pan with about 2 tablespoons cornmeal. Then place the loaves seam side down on the prepped sheet pan. Cover the loaves with a damp cloth, and let rise for 50 minutes.

Once the dough has risen preheat your oven to 375°F.

In a small bowl beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of water. Brush onto both loaves.

With a sharp knife, make one single long cut down each loaf.

Bake in the preheated oven 30 minutes, or until loaves sound hollow.
